Members of the crab family Dromiidae tend to cover their carapace mostly with sponges or colonial tunicates. More rarely are used other objects or organisms such as solitary Tunicata, Zoantharia (= encrusting anemones), valves of Bivalvia, etc.; a review of these is presented. A new association of a dromiid crab Lauridromia intermedia (Laurie, 1906) and an actinian Nemanthus annamensis Carlgren, 1943, is described and discussed. Lauridromia intermedia is recorded for the first time from the continental shelf of East Africa.

The presence of some endemic taxa of the genus Actinia from Madeira and the Canary Islands is discussed. A new species, Actinia nigropunctata, is described, and some characters of the poorly known Actinia virgata are discussed. In addition, we discuss the main characters proposed by Schmidt (1971) to distinguish species of Actinia.

In the framework of the CANCAP-Project, a long-term oceanographic collecting program performed by the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, extensive shore collections were made from 1976 onwards on most of the Macaronesian Islands. During the collecting trips, a very ornamental crab, Platypodi ella picta (A.MILNE EDWARDS, 1869) was found on three occasions by the senior author. In addition the species was collected on the coast of Senegal. In all cases it was found associated with species of Zoantharia.

The first Western Palearctic record of a Red-footed Booby Sula sula (L., 1766), a brown whitetailed morph observed on Cima (Cape Verde Islands), is described. The status of this species in the tropical South Atlantic Ocean is evaluated. At present, Fernando de Noronha is the only South Atlantic stronghold of the species (ca. 4000 individuals; cf. Oren, 1984). The species has disappeared, or almost so, from other islands (St. Helena: absent; Ascension:0-30 individuals; Ilha da Trindade: less than 100 pairs). Bunodes biscayensis Fischer, 1874, a species of Actiniaria described from Moulleau, Arcachon, south-western coast of France, and never recorded since, was rediscovered in July 1985 and found again in 1986 and 1987 in several localities along the French "Côte Basque" between the mouth of the river Adour and St. Jean-de-Luz. The species is here redescribed and referred to Bunodosoma Verrill, 1899, a genus of tropical and subtropical Atlantic and West-American intertidal and shallow water forms, hitherto not recorded from the Mediterranean and/or the Atlantic coast of Europe. Data are presented on the diet of Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881) resulting from stomach investigations based on 18 birds from Hierro (Canary Islands), 5 from Selvagem Grande (Selvagens or Salvage Islands), 2 from São Miguel and 1 from São Jorge (Azores), collected between 1977 and 1981. These data confirm the general idea that this shearwater feeds principally on fish and squid. The gut contents of five juvenile individuals of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (L.) from waters around Madeira, Selvagem Grande (Selvagens Islands) and São Miguel (Azores) were analysed macro- and microscopically. Macroscopic investigations showed that epipelagic salps (e.g., Pyrosoma atlanticum Péron) and gastropods (e.g., Ianthina spp. and Pterotrachea spp.) constituted an important part of the food remains present in these loggerheads. Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). Twentysix species of sea anemones (Actiniaria) collected in Galicia, northwestern Spain are present in the collection of the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis. They are listed and discussed. The cnidom of seventeen species is surveyed. Diadumene cincta is not a recent immigrant in western Europe. Sagartia luciae is (re)assigned to the genus Diadumene. The presence of Sagartia troglodytes in the Mediterranean is doubtful at best.

The importance of ornithological observations with respect to Columbus' discovery of America as recorded in the "Diario del descubrimiento" is recognized. The fact that his first and crucial crossing of the Atlantic coincided with the autumn migration may have contributed to its success. Columbus' log contains the first historical record of the [Magnificent] Frigate Bird, Fregata magnificens Mathews, 1914, in the Cape Verdes, with a surprisingly accurate description of its characteristic habits.

The sea anemone species Isactinernus quadrilobatus Carlgren, 1918, and Synactinernus flavus Carlgren, 1918, which were described in new monotypic genera from few specimens collected in southern Japan, are synonymized, based on many more specimens from the South Pacific. As well as the geographic range, the depth range of this species has been extended to 110-700 m. The species had been distinguished primarily on whether the oral disc had four lobes (I. quadrilobatus) or eight (Synactinernus flavus) – we conclude their number is largely related to size of the animal. Other features that Carlgren had used to differentiate the genera (and species) are inconsistently present and do not correlate with lobe number.

Several cases are reported of associated occurrence of the crab Cyclocoeloma tuberculata Miers, 1880 (Majidae) and species of Discosomatidae (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia) carried on the crab's carapace, and colonies of Xeniidae (Alcyonacea) carried on the ambulatory legs. Two new Ceriantharia, Pachycerianthus curacaoensis and Arachnanthus nocturnus, both from the Caribbean region, are described. It is recommended to avoid the terms proto- and metamesenteries in taxonomie descriptions. Op 1 juni 1982, 's morgens om 9 uur, vertrok het Nederlandse oceanografische vaartuig "Tydeman" uit de haven van Santa Cruz de Tenerife voor een marien-biologische expeditie naar de Kaapverdische eilanden. Aan boord bevond zich een team van onderzoekers en assistenten van het Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, het Rijksherbarium (beiden uit Leiden) en het Geologisch lnstituut van de Universiteit van Groningen. De expeditie paste in het kader van het zogenaamde CANCAP-project (no. 45) van genoemde instituten, waarmee reeds in 1976 werd aangevangen. Drs. J.C. den Hartog, medewerker van het Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, was aan boord van de "Tydeman" en zette zijn bevindingen voor dit tijdschrift op papier.

St.-Helena, waar Napoleon zijn einde vond, is maar een klein eiland. Toch ontwikkelde zich er in de loop van de evolutie een aantal merkwaardige eilandvormen, zowel bij de planten als de dieren. Helaas zijn er daarvan verloren gegaan door ernstige fauna- en floravervalsing.
